On today’s episode of Across the Horizon, Bob Holmes of the band SUSS is joined by harpist and composer Mary Lattimore, one of the curators of Across the Horizon Volume 2. They talk about her contributions to the series as well as those of her guests, Nailah Hunter and Meg Baird. Mary also brought along a playlist of music she’s been listening to the Italian village of Tatti, her new part-time home. The playlist includes Yo La Tengo, Windsor for the Derby, Daniel Ogren, and more.
For Flow State, we’re listening to two records by Lattimore, whom we’ve recommended a few times in the past, including an interview in 2023. Collected Pieces: 2015-2020 is a great survey of her work, showcasing the way she manipulates the harp sound with pedals to create atmospheres of profundity. Tragic Magic, her collaboration with vocalist and composer Julianna Barwick, came out in January. They recorded in a Paris museum, Lattimore using three golden harps from the 18th and 19th century and Barwick using synths and a vocoder. “It was terrifying to hear the cracks when tuning the harps; they’re very delicate instruments,” she tells Bob on the show. “You think about the person who played them last, the person who initially built them…”
