Today we’re listening to and remembering Sawako, a Japanese ambient producer from Nagoya. Since the early 2000s, she’s created “sound sculptures” which blend nature recordings and synths to the point where they become indistinguishable.1 We’re listening to two of her records that demonstrate this effect. bitter sweet from 2008 is the one with gentle drones and accompanying cello/guitar that we previously recommended in fall 2022. nu.it from 2014 channels Brian Eno and prominently features piano, the instrument she studied classically growing up.2 Sawako passed away on March 31 at home in Tokyo.3
