Today we’re listening to Hermanos Gutiérrez, Ecuadorian-Swiss guitarists Alejandro and Estevan. We recommended them in 2024 and 2023. Estevan started playing guitar in elementary school, focusing on milonga (Argentinian folk) and classical; later on, Alejandro taught himself guitar.1 The brothers started playing together regularly after a spontaneous jam session at Alejandro’s apartment.2 Hermanos Gutiérrez formed on a trip to the American southwest, specifically the Mojave Desert and Death Valley; “the desert is where our music was born,” Estevan told Premier Guitar. Their new record, Los Ojos Del Cóndor, came out in September. The idea for the record occurred to the brothers upon seeing a 1973 photo of their dad in Machu Picchu; throughout, Estevan plays the nylon guitar his father gave him at eight years old.3 The cinematic and evocative tracks are odes to the Andean mountain landscape. We’re also revisiting their 2024 record, Sonido Cósmico, which has more of a psychedelic sound, as the title suggests. Both records were produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys.
