F.S. Blumm
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to F.S. Blumm, a German guitarist from Bremen. We discovered his music via Rick Rubin’s conversation with Ezra Klein. Born in 1968, Blumm took up classical guitar around age 10 and also got into punk artists like The Stooges.1 In his own work he fuses all kinds of influences and collaborates prolifically. With his compatriot Nils Frahm, Blumm makes music that’s unpredictable; at times you wonder whether their silence-ridden guitar-and-piano duets were meticulously planned or completely improvised. We’re playing the pair’s laid-back, tender record from 2016, Tag Eins Tag Zwei, whose “Valentine My Funny” is unmissable. We’re also playing Entangleland, a more rhythmic project released in 2020 with electronic producer Andi Otto.
