On today’s episode of Ambient Country, Bob Holmes of SUSS brings back guitarist William Tyler for part two of the discussion that they started in Episode 49. Not only do they discuss his latest release
Rhetorical question; what is the difference between Tyler's music on 'Secret Stratosphere' and jam band? Instrumental rock? Is it the twang in the string that makes it 'ambient country'? I am enjoying this selection. Just reminding myself of the limits in utility of genre labels (which is not to say I eschew them, they annoy me because they are just useful enough for communication. Good end of summer sounds.
Hey, you bring up a good point. Yes, we all agree genres are a double edged sword. Categories work only up to a point. One of the guiding principals of the Across the Horizon series is to widen the boundaries and make the areas between genres more "porous."
As for the jam band concept, WT refers to Impossible Truth as a jam band, and if you heard David Morre talk about the jambient music of Cowboy Sadness in a recent episode, then you know that everyone agrees that jam bands are a very adjacent music to a lot of what you hear on Ambient Country. Obviously, the big difference is that jam bands do their jamming around songs with vocal verses and choruses, which purely intrumental music doesn't have. Trey Anastsio's latest guitar ambient record is good example of what happens when you take the singing out of the equation - it's an amazing album.
