Today we’re listening to Akusmi, a French composer and multi-instrumentalist based in London. He grew up in a musical household: his parents often brought back instruments from world travel, and he started playing classical guitar at age 7.1 He made recordings with field recordings as a teenager, moved to London to study jazz, and composed for film and TV.2 His first album as Akusmi was Fleeting Future, which came out in 2022. For last week’s Across the Horizon episode, Lara Somogyi selected the minimalist, slow-burn track “Concrescence” from it. But first we’re playing Akusmi’s latest album, Terra Incognita, which came out in July. On it, he plays 21 instruments in concert with tabla by Sarathy Korwar, ngoni by Dudù Kouate, and more.3
