Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Zhu Xiao-Mei, a Chinese pianist from Shanghai. Born in 1949, Zhu started playing piano at age 3 and, exhibiting prodigy talent, was admitted to conservancy at 13.

Zhu was put in a labor camp under Mao and, after sneaking in a piano and sheet music, fled to Paris. Fast forward to the 21st century when she’s put out extraordinary classical records. Haydn: Works for Piano is a precise and heartfelt collection of the composer’s sonatas. J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations expresses the beauty of the 1741 compositions through her unique combination of precision and feeling.
