Today we’re listening to Windy & Carl, an American space rock duo consisting of Windy Weber and Carl Hultgren. We recommended the husband and wife pair for the first time last year. Windy & Carl came up in the Michigan indie/experimental scene in the ‘90s by applying many effects to guitars, creating shoegaze-adjacent ambient pieces. They just released a new LP, Windy&Carl Meet Optigan Conservatory, which is their first since 2020. It’s a collaboration with their longtime friends Frank Rotondo and Fred Thomas, who contribute electric keyboard and synths over the guitars in largely improvised sessions. We’re also playing Portal, which was originally self-released in 1994 and is being reissued by Kranky; that one showcases their early experimentation with stretching, distorting, modulating, and looping guitar sounds.
