It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Sakura Tsuruta, a Japanese electronic musician from Tokyo. She studied classical piano growing up, and became interested in the therapeutic application of music in high school when her grandfather faced dementia.1 At Berklee College of Music she studied music therapy and electronic production; she thereafter worked at a hospice, using music in palliative care.2 That experience led her to start making music herself, in which she fuses her classical background and electronic production techniques. We’re starting with her 2024 LP, GEMZ, a collection of eight tracks that combine driving bass lines, precise percussion, and melodic arpeggios and leads. We’re also playing her 2022 LP, C/O, which is more introspective. She also has plenty of sets on YouTube, including a great one for Lot Radio from 2023.
