Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Philip Glass, an American composer and pianist from Baltimore. Born in 1937, Glass studied composition at Juilliard and collected avant-garde influences across the 1960s including Jean-Luc Godard, Richard Serra, and Ravi Shankar. Along with Steve Reich, Glass pioneered the musical style of minimalism, which used static phrasing and heavy repetition. We’re playing a great example of this style, Glass’s score for the 1982 movie Koyaanisqatsi, which recently turned 40. Directed by Godfrey Reggio, the movie and its score portray modern humanity as ever-accelerating and ultimately unsustainable.

I know Philip Glass is old, but this post makes me feel old realising that I saw Koyaanisqatsi 40 years ago. Good God.
