Natalia Tsupryk
Today we’re listening to Natalia Tsupryk, a Ukrainian violinist and composer from Kyiv. She started playing violin and piano around age 5, and as she continued with the instruments found herself frequently improvising.1 That inclination toward creating music led to her first official composition gig at age 22. She only started releasing her own music in 2020, telling Resonance, “I didn’t have the courage to release any solo work until the COVID pandemic.” In addition to classical influences she draws from electronic music, naming Grandbrothers, Teho, and Monolink in particular.2 Her latest record is a score for the documentary The Lake, about climate change’s impact on Utah in particular. It’s a moving collection of mostly string pieces – she records all the string parts – with synth accompaniment and delicate piano. We’re also playing her gorgeous album Inventions from April, a collaboration with British pianist and composer Angus MacRae. “Magellanic” and “Eternalism” are incredible.
