Mr. Soon
Today we’re listening to Mr. Soon, an American electronic musician. He started making music in the ‘90s in the Phoenix scene, specifically through the local label Canyon Records. His only solo album as Mr. Soon is a 2003 LP called Places in Arizona, a downtempo electronic record reminiscent of Boards of Canada and DJ Shadow. It’s a concept album which as the title suggests is a road trip across Arizona, with track names like “Gila Bend,” “Nazlini,” and “Paradise Valley.” Most tracks are trip-hop synths+breakbeats, but there are a few ambient tracks on the second half. The 18-minute “Echo Canyon” is a study in reverb. We’re also playing Points of Origin, his 2007 collaboration with flute player and maker Anthony Wakeman, which blends Soon’s production with Wakeman’s Native American cedar flute.
