Today we’re listening to the Modern Mandolin Quartet, a quartet founded in San Francisco in 1985. Mandonlist Mike Marshall formed it with Dana Rath, John Imholz, and Paul Binkley, with the shared mission of elevating the mandolin as an instrument worthy of classical and contemporary music.1 Imholz played the larger mandocello and Binkley played the mandola (viola equivalent), mirroring the traditional chamber quartet. Their 2012 record Americana contains a century of American compositions by Copland, Bernstein, Gershwin, and Glass. What a record! We’re also playing their 1988 LP, Modern Mandolin Quartet, which plays classical pieces by Bach, Debussy, Ravel, and more.
