Today we’re listening to Julia Gjertsen, a Norwegian pianist and composer based in Oslo. We last recommended her music in 2024. She started learning piano at age 7, taking lessons from her grandmother’s friend.1 As a teenager she played guitar and wrote songs in bands, and began using a DAW (in particular, Reason) in 2008. In her original music, she foregrounds the piano and adorns the tracks with synth pads/arps and field recordings. “My music is based on three core components I like to call the ‘3 I’s,’ she told 15Questions: “improvisation, intuition, and introspection.” Her new record, El Miedo No es Una Opción is a collaboration with Chilean composer Nico Rosenberg. We’re also revisiting her 2024 solo record, Shadow Light.
