Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Hiromi, a Japanese pianist, composer, and bandleader from Hamamatsu. Thank you to for surfacing her music recently. Hiromi started piano lessons at age 6, and moved to the U.S. in 1999 to study at Berklee.1 She caught the attention of Ahmad Jamal who became a mentor and produced her debut album.2 Today we’re first listening to her 2019 record, Spectrum, which opens with a speedy demonstration of her virtuosity before settling into a melange of blues, cool jazz, pop, and classical. Second we’re playing her 2008 record, Duet, which is a series of live recordings at the Blue Note jazz club with Chick Corea. She also has plenty of performances on YouTube, including an electric Tiny Desk Concert from this past September.
