It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Helena Hauff, a German techno producer and DJ from Hamburg. As a teenager she discovered a literal underground techno scene at the Golden Pudel, a club where she would later become a resident DJ.1 Since 2013 she’s put out music on the label Ninja Tune. We’re first playing her 2018 LP, Qualm, which opens with heavy distortion and sustains the intensity, with a few ambient exceptions (tracks 4, 8, and 9). We’re also playing Discreet Desires from 2015, which applies less distortion and resonance but goes more minor-key.
