Today we’re listening to Egberto Gismonti, a Brazilian composer, guitarist, and pianist from Carmo. Born in 1947, he started studying piano at age six, going on to study at in Paris, where he was drawn especially to Ravel’s voicings.1 Returning to Brazil, he incorporated choro, a fast-paced and expressive traditional Brazilian style into his work. That meant learning the guitar, and amazingly he became virtuosic at a second instrument. In the 1970s he signed with ECM, the German jazz label, which went on to release about a dozen of his records. Solo from 1979 is, as the title suggests, a collection of solo performances on guitar and piano. Alma from 1986 is a collection of energetic piano performances, showcasing his signature blend of classical rigor and folk expression.
