It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Carl Craig, an American electronic musician and DJ from Detroit. As a teenager he was exposed to the emergent Detroit techno scene, seeing artists like Jeff Mills and Juan Atkins play at local clubs.1 “Craig’s career over the past 30 years has been defined by its capaciousness,” wrote Zack Graham in The Nation in 2021, “working under the aegis of any genre that holds his curiosity at the moment, so long as it allows him to achieve the goal of creating a specific atmosphere.” In April of this year, Craig released Meditations, an hourlong collection of minimalist synth compositions, a sort of back to basics record that channels techno into a kosmische format. Craig produced music under many monikers, including Paperclip People, under which he released the mid-90s club hit “Throw.” That track is collected on the 1996 record The Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich, which we’re also playing.
