Butcher Brown
Today we’re listening to Butcher Brown, a jazz quintet formed in Virginia in 2009. The group is Morgan Burrs (guitar), Corey Fonville (drums), DJ Harrison (keys), Andrew Randazzo (bass), and Marcus Tenny (trumpet and sax). They bring hip-hop, funk, and other influences into their instrumental records. Their 2018 record, Afrokuti: A Tribute to Fela, is four afrobeat tracks paying homage to Fela Kuti. Their latest record is another homage, this time to Miles Davis and John Coltrane. A Supreme Blue, which came out in July, is modern interpretations of Davis’s Kind of Blue and Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. They teamed up with trumpeter Nicholas Payton, an American trumpeter from New Orleans. “All Blues” and “Pursuance” are the standouts to us.
