Buddhadev Das Gupta
Good morning.
Today we’re listening to Buddhadev Das Gupta, an Indian sarod player from Kolkata. He grew up training with Radhika Mohan Maitra and studied mechanical engineering at what is now IIEST, Shibpur.1 The sarod is a fretless stringed instrument, with about 20 strings, mostly sympathetic strings, played with nails rather than fingertips to imitate the human voice.2 We’re first playing Das Gupta’s 1978 record Sarod Recital, which has three longform performances of sarod, the second and third of which feature a tabla accompaniment. We’re also playing The Raga Guide, a mega compilation of raga recordings, many of which from Das Gupta but also from bansuri player Hariprasad Chaurasia and singer Shruti Sadolikar. If you’re interested in learning more about Das Gupta’s story and influences, check out Raga Records’ interview with him.
