Today we’re listening to Seconds, an American musician from New York. Drafts is their fourth LP released on Flow State Records. Previous releases have hewed more toward ambient, but this one incorporates more acoustic guitar and electronic influences (Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross, Gesaffelstein). The genres reflected are ambient, instrumental folk, horror score, and classical, and the lofi recording style emphasizes human musicianship. The album is available for free/name-your-price on Bandcamp under a Creative Commons license. We’re also revisiting their prior self-titled album from 2022, which is more motoric ambient, drawn from krautrock influences like NEU! and Can.

Davi Music - The Nectar of Now (Flow State Records 010)

Today we’re listening to Davi Music, a composer and multi-instrumentalist from Chicago. His new album, The Nectar of Now, is the latest release on Flow State Records in collaboration with Aural Canyon. Previous Davi records have combined guitar tape loops, synths, and field recordings into halcyon ambient soundscapes. This new record is a bit different, playing gentle covers of traditional American songs, spirituals, and folk standards. He enlists violinist Michael Goldstein across the tracks, which include “Kumbaya,” “Home On The Range,” and “Shenandoah.” We’re also revisiting Good Morning Deja Vu, which came out on Flow State Records back in 2023.

Seconds - Fascinating Stuff (Flow State Records 009)

Today we’re listening to Seconds, an electronic musician based in Los Angeles. Fascinating Stuff is the latest and ninth LP published on Flow State Records. It’s a dozen eclectic compositions, from Burial-style melancholic ambient to ebullient beat sketches. Track two, “Pacific Pond,” features clarinetist Stuart Bogie improvising over ebbing/flowing synth pads and an 808 bass. The record cover (pictured below) shows the Euclid satellite’s images of the NGC 682 globular cluster, a highly dense collection of ancient stars located about 1.6 million light years from earth. The record was mastered by the one and only . We’re also playing Seconds’ 2023 self-titled album, which sustains a consistent 160BPM and reflects krautrock and kosmische influences.

Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Davi Music, a producer and multi-instrumentalist from Chicago. His new album, which came out on Friday, is the eighth LP from Flow State Records. Good Morning Deja Vu’s tracks are all tape loops, recorded on a 4-track with all analog processing. The record blends natural and artificial sounds, opening with waves from which synth ambience emerges. The gentle ambience throughout was designed to contain the minimum number of elements capable of generating a feeling. We’re also playing his previous record from last year, Freedom Arboretum, which is equally transporting.

Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Seconds, an ambient artist. Their self-titled album just came out on Flow State Records. Seconds is mostly “kinetic ambient” pieces, longform meditations over 160BPM bass pulsations. The pieces were inspired by Steve Reich and Oren Ambarchi, whose music has the appearance of frenzy but is tonally static. Seconds’ tempo is a nod to Chicago footwork. The final track, “Esalen,” is a soft landing. This is their second LP, following the first one, Landers, which came out about a year ago.

Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Corntuth, a Brooklyn-based ambient music composer. Corntuth’s latest record, Letters to My Robot Son, is the third LP they’ve put out on Flow State Records. Using sequences from a 1985 Korg Poly-800 mkII and the ethereal, lonely sounds of a 1983 Yamaha DX7, Letters charts a journey from tidy, sequenced modules to hazy, sprawling ambient. We’re also re-upping their two prior releases, The Desert is Paper Thin from 2021 and Music to Work to from 2020.

Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Davi Music, a producer and multi-instrumentalist from Chicago. His new record, Freedom Arboretum, is the fifth LP released on Flow State Records. It’s the fast follow-up to May’s No Waves at Purple Twilight. The new record consists mostly of minimalist guitar and synth pads. Whereas No Waves tape-looped shimmering guitar, Freedom Arboretum simulates the effect of machine repetition with precise, patient performances. We especially love tracks 5 (“Momentary Pause…”) and 9 (“Fugitive Whales”) which stand out sonically. If you enjoy the music, check out Davi Music live in Brooklyn tomorrow night.

Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Davi Music, a producer and multi-instrumentalist from Chicago. We first featured Davi Music back in March 2021. We love his use of synths and cassette tapes, which give his ambient recordings a crackling layer of nostalgia. His latest record, No Waves At Purple Twilight, is the fourth album released on Flow State Records. The hypnotic two-track LP is primarily twelve-string guitar loops with a delay effect, mixed live. Like Steve Reich’s counterpoints, the different track phases create parallax effects. We’re also re-upping his earlier synth record, Sky Above Clouds.

Today we’re listening to Seconds, an ambient artist based in Los Angeles. The new album Landers is the third release on Flow State Records. Seconds attempts to reflect locations in music using synths and field recordings. The tracks on Landers were primarily made using the Waldorf Blofeld synthesizer which uses wavetable synthesis. The ambient / drone music is accompanied by occasional field recordings. Label mate Corntuth contributes synths on track two.

Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Flow State Records’ second release, the sophomore album from Corntuth, a Brooklyn-based ambient producer. The Desert Is Paper Thin blends country and ambient, primarily acoustic guitar and the cosmic emanations of a 1983 Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. The album takes inspiration from artists like Marisa Anderson and William Tyler, and features pedal steel from Nashville’s Pete Finney. “I always wanted to pair the DX7 with pedal steel, because I think they're the two loneliest sounding instruments there are,” said Corntuth. We’re also playing their debut LP, Music To Work To, which came out last fall and consists of 13 improvisations made on the DX7.

Corntuth - Music To Work To (Flow State Records 001)

Good morning.

Today we’re listening to Flow State Records’ first release: Music To Work To, the debut LP from Brooklyn-based ambient producer Corntuth. (We premiered it on last Tuesday’s subscriber mix.) The album consists of 13 improvisations made on a vintage synth. The artist says, “I started making this record because I had just gotten a 1983 Yamaha DX7 from my friend & synth guru, Tony Norton (of Analog Craftsman), and needed a project to use it on. Also, there's a pandemic on and I spend all day inside my apartment.” The album runs continuously and each segment creates a Brian Eno-esque atmosphere of profundity. We hope you enjoy.
